“Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween” is another Hollywood movie sequel that acts as a cash grab for the movie executives without giving any substance to the movie except for some mediocre acting. Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween is the sequel to the 2015 film “Goosebumps.”
Opening on the weekend of Oct. 12, the sequel features returning stars such as Jack Black, but otherwise brings in an all new cast and story compared to the first film. The movie has grossed over $83 million worldwide which is a little over half of what the original made with a final box office of $150 million worldwide.
The story of this film is not very enjoyable. Part of the reason is that the director made the pacing for the film go faster than what the story could handle because of the oversimplicity of the story. The majority of the story is resolved within about ten to fifteen minutes at the very end giving the story a very forced and rushed conclusion.
There is not much depth to the main group of protagonists and the villian only has context from the previous film. This movie is filled with fluff characters that are interchangeable and lack emotion played by mediocre actors.
There are some good moments of comedy in this movie, but jokes are too far in between and not consistent in execution and laughter. For a movie under the comedy label, there is a higher expectation for jokes and frequency of those jokes, and the movie does not deliver on that promise. The movie has funny moments, but overall it is not a funny movie.
“Goosebumps 2” is a lighthearted film that is easier to watch with the family and especially young kids. This movie lowers standards for family movies significantly. It tries to capitalize on the success of the first film that most do not remember from 2015. Hollywood has developed a recent habit of forcing out sequels and bad films without consideration of the quality of the product presented to the audience.
If there was a number rating that would be given to this film out of ten it would be about a 5 out of 10 similar to the IMDb rating of 6 out of ten10. I would recommend this film to those watching it with family members or younger siblings, but not to those people who want to watch it by themselves or want to watch a good children’s movie with good comedy and story.
5 out of 10 torches.
