It is common knowledge that we stole America from the indigenous peoples. I mean, everyone should know by now that Christopher Columbus was a fraud and a murderer.
However, some still have not gotten the memo. One of these people being the President, who on the morning of April 2, made a claim that illegal immigrants were “stealing America.” Somehow, the irony of this statement did not occur to him.
According to CNN, after an attack of the DACA program, President Trump tweeted that “our country is being stolen” by the flood of illegal immigrants coming into the United States.
This tweet came only one day after a tweet from the president declaring “no more DACA deal,” indicating that he would not continue to negotiate with democrats on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
The funniest thing about the President’s comments is the complete lack of awareness that comes with them. America, from its very beginning, was founded on stealing the property of those who got here before us.
From the pilgrims who came on the Mayflower and gradually stole land from the indigenous peoples, to the Trail of Tears started by President Andrew Jackson, white colonizers had a habit of murdering natives and taking their land.
The point is, America was founded on immigrating here and taking things that were not theirs by force. It is how most Americans ended up here. At least, everyone besides African Americans brought involuntarily as slaves.
The United States has been a haven for those escaping from religious persecution and dictatorships for years. Each century has brought a new wave of people whom America brought a sense of safety and freedom and a place to start fresh. The U.S. has always been a place of safety for those who needed it most.
Those coming here illegally now are no different than those who would come during times of war and famine and dictatorships. These are people who are only looking for a place to live where they can be safe and live the way they wanted to. The people that the president so frequently attacks are no different than the ancestors of many who live here now.
America has a long history with immigrants, to say the very least, and that is not going to be ending anytime soon. In order to move forward as a country, the United States, and subsequently, Trump, needs to acknowledge that America was built on illegal immigrants and stolen land. And, frankly, the land he thinks they are stealing is nothing compared to the land his ancestors before him stole from Native Americans.
