The men’s baseball team has gotten off to a solid start this season. They are 9-5 and currently have a two game home streak as they are beginning to head into conference play, according to Roosevelt Lakers Athletics.
Head coach Steve Marchi describes the recent play that has contributed to his team’s recent success.
“We have been hitting pretty well as a team and along with very good starts from our pitchers,” Marchi said. “We have very good energy from our bench and excellent team cohesiveness. Our team defense is not quite up to our standards and we have had an inconsistent bullpen up to this point.”
According to senior pitcher Marcus Radz, the team’s attitude in the locker room could not be any better than it is right now, as they are moving closer into the season.
“We have a great mindset and we are all friends,” Radz said. “Everyone is playing well and we are picking up the ones who are not. Everyone has bad days and I think everyone is starting to realize that.”
Sophomore outfielder Andrew Bohlmann believes that the team’s morale has been essential to their on-the-field success.
“Coming off a successful spring break, we are holding our heads high and we know that this team can achieve greatness,” Bohlmann said. “We have confidence in ourselves and one another, and we know that we have our team behind us to pick us up when we’re down.”
While the Lakers are off to a hot start, Bohlmann does not want others to fall into the hype as the team is still pursuing to achieve a spot in the playoffs.
“One of our team goals is to be conference champions,” Bohlmann said. “We are off to a good start, but we need to take things one game at a time. Staying happy yet not satisfied will keep our team with a positive mindset but still yearning for more wins.”
Radz said that he is still anticipating a lot from the season looking ahead.
“I want to be a part of at least one Roosevelt baseball playoff team, so we need to bring this energy in conference,” Radz said.
In order to stay on the right path, the team must improve on their errors, which, according to Marchi, is their defense.
“We need to eliminate the errors on defense that have occurred on routine plays,” Marchi said. “Our bullpen is young, so we feel that with experience will we see more success.”
The Lakers’ next home game is March 23 at 1:00 p.m.
