Incidents having occurred on or near University of Chicago Streeterville and DePaul University Lincoln Park may also be included in the Crime Blotter. Periodically, the passing of college students or faculty will also be included in this blotter.

Autopsy results in for student found dead in University of Chicago dorm room

An autopsy from the Cook County medical examiner showed that alcohol poisoning was the cause of death for a University of Chicago student who was found dead in his campus door room last February.

Nicholas Brastins Barnes of Pittsburgh, Pa., was found by police Feb. 15. His decomposing body was found face down on the floor in his single room at the campus’ International House, according to a police report.

According to the toxicology report, the cause of death was accident due to ethanol toxicity.

Elderly man beaten, robbed near DePaul campus

An “elderly gentleman” was beaten and robbed in Lincoln Park on April 13, according to officials at DePaul University.

The elderly gentleman was walking in the 900 block of West Belden Avenue at about 5:45 a.m. when the attacker struck the man and took his wallet.

Chicago police have classified the incident as an aggravated robbery. School officials are asking anyone with information about the robbery to call (773) 325-7777.

Cicero teen honored for detaining rapist at UIC Dorm

The town of Cicero honored a college freshman on April 8 for helping detain a man who sexually assaulted a female student inside a dormitory shower at the University of Illinois at Chicago on March 31, CBS Chicago reported.

At a town hall meeting, 19-year-old David Guerrero was recognized for his bravery.

According to police, Tavares Humphries attacked a woman at around 10 a.m. on March 31, while she was showering in the women’s bathroom on the fifth floor of the Commons South Residence Hall.

Guerrero, a freshman at UIC, heard the victim scream and ran into the bathroom at the time of the attack, CBS Chicago reported.

Guerrero told the young woman to run, and then he kept the suspect from leaving. He said Humphries appeared to be on drugs, and he led Humphries out of the bathroom and sat with him until the police arrived.

Two domestic battery reports filed at DePaul University Lincoln Park Campus

On April 2 and April 7, domestic battery reports were filed at DePaul University’s Lincoln Park Campus.

The April 2 domestic battery report was filed regarding an incident that occurred in the lobby of McCabe Hall, according to DePaul University’s Crime Prevention Office. Chicago Police responded to the scene. The offender left the scene upon the arrival of police.

On April 7, a domestic battery and theft report was filed regarding an incident near the entrance of Corcoran Hall. Again, the offender left the scene upon the arrival of police.

Truman College instructor accused in sexual assault of former student

An associate English professor at Truman College allegedly sexually assaulted a former student he began dating, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Max Gulias II attacked the woman at his residence in the 1500 block of South Sangamon after the two met up at a bar on March 20, Assistant State’s Attorney Dan Griffin said.

The woman, 28, fell asleep on Gulias’ bed before she woke up with no clothes on and Gulias on top of her, Griffin said.

The woman tried to fight 45-year-old Gulias off, but he used his weight to hold her down, Griffin said.

The woman immediately reported the attack to security officials at the apartment building as she left, Griffin said.

Gulias, who was the woman’s professor in 2007 and 2008, turned himself in to police on April 14.

  1. Truman College professors Ben Ortiz, Anne Close, Ana King, and Kate Gillespie all new that Max Gulias played with his young female students. I fielded so many complaints about him from my female students, but when I tried to complain, the three women who run the Communications Department at Truman College didn’t want pursue “heresay.”

    • He is a sick person. i heard he is engaged to a lady half his age!! She was his student as well. This guy has to be banned from teaching.
