Missing SIU student from Martin Grove found dead
According to the Chicago Tribune, 19-year-old sophomore student Pravin M. Varughese of Southern Illinois University was found dead Feb. 18 in a wooded area.
The SIU criminal justice student had been missing since Feb. 12.
He was last seen about 11 p.m. that Wednesday at a party in the 600 block of West College Street, according to Carbondale Police.
Varughese’s body was found three miles from where he had last been seen on West College Street, police said.
Authorities said the SIU student had walked into a wooded area on the eastern edge of town after getting into a dispute with someone at the party.
An autopsy and toxicology report has been ordered and could take place Wednesday according to police.
Varughese’s family put up a $5,000 reward, which grew to $15,000, for any information, according to the Chicago Tribune. They also launched an online fundraiser for additional money through the Facebook page, “Missing: Pravin Varughese.”
Harold Washington College student dies after cell phone robbery
A Harold Washington College student who was shot despite surrendering his cell phone to two robbers died Feb. 15, according to Chicago CBS Local.
Kevin Baker was pronounced dead at 5:45 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Baker was on his way back from class Thursday Feb. 13. when the robbery and shooting happened, said Earnestine Barnette, neighbor and family friend.
Baker was walking with his cousin in the 6200 block of South Campbell Ave. at about 4:15 p.m. when two people — one armed with a handgun — got out of a dark-colored van and demanded their cell phones, police said. After the two handed over their phones, the armed robber opened fire, striking Baker in the head.
Baker, an only child, was studying to be a veterinarian.
UIC student ‘punched,’ ‘robbed’ on campus
A University of Illinois at Chicago Student was punched and robbed on Feb. 12, according to DNAInfo Chicago.
The student was between the school’s west and east campuses in the 1200 block of W. Flournoy St. at 5:20 p.m. when two men approached, UIC police said.
One man grabbed the student’s cell phone and identification, and another man punched the student in the back of the head.
The first attacker was described as a black man, about 6’1”, between 17 and 18 years old. He was wearing a dark blue cap, dark jeans and a dark blue jacket.
The second attacker was also described as a black man between 17 and 18 years old, about 5’10”. Police said he was wearing a red-and-white colored baseball cap.
The student refused medical attention following the attack, officials said.

Northwestern being sued by student claiming sexual assault by professor
According to Sun-Times Media, a Northwestern University student filed a federal lawsuit against the school on Feb. 10.
The student alleges that university officials acted with “deliberate indifference and retaliation” after she reported a professor sexually assaulted her during her freshman year.
The plaintiff, now a junior in the Medill School of Journalism, claimed that tenured professor, at Evanston university sexually assaulted her in February 2012 after they attended an art event together in Chicago,the suit said.
The university eventually found the student’s claims credible but has not disclosed to the student how the professor was disciplined.
Suspicious person issued criminal trespass warning at DePaul’s Loop Campus
According to the DePaul University Crime Prevention Office, a Criminal Trespass to Land Warning was issued to a suspicious person in the women’s restroom of the Lewis Center. Chicago Police were notified of the incident on Feb. 12.
Sexual assault report filed on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus
According to DePaul University’s Crime Prevention Office, a criminal sexual assault report was filed on Feb. 10 in regards to information Public Safety obtained from the Chicago Police.
The incident occurred in McCabe Hall at the Lincoln Park Campus.
