Roosevelt University Athletics partnered with Lids last semester to launch an exclusive Lakers Sideline Store. Roosevelt now joins schools across the country in their partnership with the sporting goods store to give students greater access to spirit wear.
While Roosevelt has a school bookstore that offers official athletic and university apparel and accessories, the partnership with Lids offers increased benefits due to the exclusively online platform. Students can choose from a wider variety of designs, and anything on the site can be personalized with names, positions or titles.
“I bought my mom and dad the ‘Roosevelt Mom’ and ‘Roosevelt Dad’ shirts,” senior Madeline Moss said. “They loved them. I liked it because it was cheaper than the bookstore, and it was also customizable.”
Through the store’s website, students can custom design any item of clothing in Lids’ extensive collection, which also includes officially licensed Nike products. While the bookstore must limit their inventory to fit demand, the online store only makes shirts as they are ordered in order to offer more options. Lids does not lose money if a particular product is unpopular, which allows them to keep a large design library and low prices.
Students can get the name of almost any Roosevelt sports team or club screenprinted onto shirts, pants, jerseys and more. As Roosevelt pushes to build up its athletic program and draw greater crowds to sporting events, fans can show support by wearing their new green and white apparel while cheering on their favorite Lakers.
“I bought a hoodie and a jersey,” senior Andrea Espinosa said. “I loved it because the clothes are more flattering for women than the ones in the bookstore.”
Because the Sideline Store can offer more as far as clothing styles, it has something to fit every body type. Female fans and athletes don’t have to choose between tight fitting or unisex — the sideline store provides more complimentary silhouettes.
“I’m planning on shopping there again,” Espinosa said. “I have recommended it to several people because they all love my Roosevelt jersey.”
Some students are not yet aware of the store’s arrival on campus, as its exposure has been kept mainly to Twitter and the Lakers website. But even students who have yet to shop there see the store as a feasible alternative to buying from the bookstore.
“It would really just depend on what sort of apparel you were looking to buy,” junior Angeline Jones said. “If you want athletic apparel, especially team-specific gear, you would probably need to go to this new site.”
One advantage the bookstore still holds over the sideline store is in accessories. At the Roosevelt bookstore, students can purchase items like mugs, keychains and notebooks with the Roosevelt logo on it. The Sideline Store website, for the time being, only offers apparel.
Prices in the store are fairly average, with T-shirts running at about $24.95 and hoodies anywhere from $40 to $70, depending on the style. Students can also get personalized jerseys for $31.95.
